Not everyone wants to spend time in a hotel – not everyone has the money. The good news is that if you want to go to the seaside for a few days then there are far cheaper options available. If you want to stay in a youth hostel you get to have a great time at the seaside without breaking the bank.
The hostel at Whitby is actually far grander than it sounds. The building is Grade-1 listed and it is located right on the headland, next door to Whitby Abbey. The views of the ruins are amazing and if you stay here, you get free entry to the Abbey. You can descend into Whitby’s Old Town from here where there are plenty of great shops and cafes.
In Wales the youth hostel at Poppit Sands is family-friendly and is located within its own private grounds on the Teifi estuary. There is a great beach close to the hostel and here you can see seals and dolphins when the weather is fine. You have easy access to the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path here and there are activity centres locally where you can try climbing or canoeing.
Cornwall is home to Treyarnon Bay and it is very popular with surfers. Many visitors come back time after time thanks to the beachfront location. The hostel has a very laid-back atmosphere as well as a bar, ice-cream shack and a campsite. From music gigs to BBQs, there is always something happening here. There is a natural swimming pool formed by the rocks at the base of the cliffs and if you want to try surfing there are several surf schools where you can pick up a few tips. The hostel is also close to Newquay and Padstow, both of which are a great day out no matter what your age.
